Expressing “grave concern” over the continued attacks on civilians and the deterioration of the humanitarian situation in the Darfur region of Sudan, the UN Security Council has extended by six months the UN mission in southern Sudan. The Security Council has urged the Secretary General to appoint a chief envoy to lead the force. The resolution extending the mission also condemns the continued attacks on civilians and calls for an end to the atrocities occurring in the region.
