On February 23, Trial Chamber II of the ICTR sentenced former Youth Organiser of the Ngoma Commune, Joseph Nzabirinda, to seven years of imprisonment for aiding and abetting and murder as a crime against humanity. Originally indicted in December of 2001, the charges against Nzabirinda included genocide, conspiracy to commit genocide, and rape as a crime against humanity. He entered a guilty plea for murder and accomplice by omission on December 14, 2006. The chamber considered Nzabirinda’s guilty plea and public expressions of remorse as mitigating factors in the sentencing. For the complete decision, see here.
