The Equator Initiative, a partnership of the United Nations, civil society, business, governments and communities committed to supporting grassroots efforts to reduce poverty through the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, announced the finalists for its 2006 Equator Prize on Monday. Awarded biennially since 2002, the Prize focuses on community-based initiatives dedicated to the Equator Initiative’s goals taking place between 23.5 degrees of latitude north and south of the equator. A jury of leaders in the development and environment field will select the five Equator Prize 2006 winners from the finalists and announce their results at an event hosted by the Government of Germany on World Environment Day, to take place on June 5, 2007.
